Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is ourValues™?

ourValues™ is the new, smarter way, to manage your child’s screen time.

It helps your children learn how to effectively self-manage their screen time while learning family values. With ourValues™, not only do you effectively manage your children’s screen time use, but you are more easily able to achieve behavioural change, ensure your children get their daily tasks completed and instil the values important to your family.

Assign activities and behaviours based on your family values for your child and on completion of these responsibilities, your child will get to keep their current daily screen time allowances, or, you could reward them with a small increase. You can also choose to set a daily screen time reduction for instances where assigned responsibilities are not completed by your child.

How does ourValues™ work?

ourValues™ manages your child’s screen time by using what you have set for your child’s profile. Create their daily screen time allowances, a set of responsibilities, and, time bonus and deduction settings. Once your child’s profile is set up, your child can only use their mobile device when they sign in to ourValues™.  That’s when the timer starts counting down.  Once they’ve used up their daily allowance, apps* on their mobile devices will not be available.

When you approve your child’s scoreboard, ourValues™ will automatically maintain, reward or deduct your child’s daily screen time allowances based on what you have set for their profile.  You can approve your child’s scoreboard at any time, irrespective of whether your child has performed their own self-assessment.

* For iOS devices, Apple Inc. has decreed that certain apps will never be restricted from use. These include the Phone and Messages apps and these apps will always be available for use.
How do I set up ourValues™?

ourValues™ only needs to be installed on those devices that your child uses so that it can manage the screen time on those devices.  If your child uses your personal parent device, set up that device as a “Parent” device.  If your child does not use your personal parent device, you do not need to install ourValues™ on your personal parent device. All other devices that your child uses should be set up as “Child or Family” devices.

Setting up ourValues™ is easy!  It simply involves installing the app and creating your child’s screen time parameters.

After downloading ourValues™ from the app store, launch it and follow the prompts on your device to install it.

Once installed, tap “Sign Up” to start creating your child’s screen time parameters.  Once again, it’s as simple as following the prompts on the device and once completed, you’re done!

TIP:  If your child does not use your personal parent device, you can still set up ourValues™ on your personal parent device and use it as a remote control! From your personal parent device, launch ourValues™, sign in as a parent and use it as a remote control to (i) restrict your child’s device usage immediately using the Restrict Now function, accessible from the Settings cog on the top right hand corner of your child’s dashboard, or, (ii) update any usage parameters that you have set for your child.

What is a "Parent" or "Child or Family" Device?

ourValues™ behaves differently depending on the device option you choose.

“Parent” device

If you are a parent and you are installing ourValues™ on your personal device that primarily is only used by you, please choose the Parent Device option.

On a Parent device, ourValues™ is not running and this allows you to use your personal device as normal. ourValues™ only works when you need it to, when you launch it by tapping the ourValues™ icon. Note: You will need to launch ourValues™ whenever you allow your child to use your personal device (your chid will need to sign in using their PIN), or, when you are using your own device to remotely control your child’s devices.

“Child or Family” device

Choose the Child or Family device option if you are installing ourValues™ on your child’s device or a device that primarily is shared between family members.

On Child or Family devices, your child will need to sign in to ourValues™ to use the device. ourValues will then keep track of your child’s device usage and achievement against their responsibilities, blocking and unblocking apps based on parameters set by you as the parent.

To access and change device type, sign in to ourValues to get to the parent home screen. Tap the Menu icon at the top left hand corner of the screen and select the Device Settings line item. Simply turn the Parent Device slider On or Off to change the device type.

A scoreboard full of oVees means your child has been responsible and has completed all activities, and demonstrated all behaviours, that you have set as your family’s values.

This report is currently available for Android users only and requires an active app subscription.

This report provides details on what apps your child has been using and for how long, as well as the devices used.

Manage Daily Screen Time Allowances

How does ourValues™ manage my child's screen time?

ourValues™ automatically manages your child’s screen time based on parameters set by you as the parent.  These parameters are set in your child’s Usage Schedule.

Your child’s screen time will be restricted when they have used up their daily screen time allowance, when it’s outside of their allowed usage schedule, or, when you manually restrict their use of devices.

When a restriction is in place, a red oVee will be displayed next to your child’s photo. While restricted, apps will be blocked from use on Android devices.  On iOS devices, all third party apps (and some native Apple apps) will be hidden from view.

How do I set up my child’s Usage Schedule?

Your child’s Usage Schedule is where you set how ourValues™ automatically manages your child’s device usage times.

Here’s an overview of what the different fields mean:

Daily Limit incl. Bonus: The maximum amount of time your child can use devices, including any bonus time your child earns for completing ALL weekly responsibilities. Note that the app’s automatically calculated Daily Allowance will not exceed this Daily Limit incl. Bonus set by you as the parent.

Daily Allowance: The amount of time your child can use devices between the Start Time and End Time for a specific day.  Your child cannot use devices after reaching the Daily Allowance. This Daily Allowance will automatically change each time after you have finalised the week. Note that the Daily Allowance will not exceed the Daily Limit incl. Bonus set by you as the parent.

Start Time: The time of day ourValues™ allows your child to start using devices.  Your child cannot use apps before this time.

End Time: The time of day ourValues™ stops your child from using devices.  Your child cannot use apps after this time.

To set your child’s Usage Schedule, simply tap the relevant fields and make your changes. When done, tap the “tick” symbol at the top right hand corner of the screen to apply your changes.

The bottom of the screen displays the devices your child is currently signed in to and whether the change to Time Left has been actioned on those devices.

Reward Right Behaviours

How does ourValues™ reward the right behaviours?

ourValues™ rewards the right behaviours if your child completes all responsibilities assigned to them by you as the parent.  The reward could simply be that your child gets to keep their current daily screen time allowance (if you set Bonus Time as zero), or, you could give them a small increase in their daily screen time allowance.

What is the Time Bonus and Deduction?

This is the amount of time ourValues™ will automatically add or deduct from your child’s Daily Allowance, depending on whether your child has completed ALL weekly responsibilities or missed ANY responsibilities during a week.

Bonus Time (HH:MM) is the time you set ourValues™ to automatically add to your child’s Daily Allowance, for completing ALL weekly responsibilities during the week. For example, if you set Bonus Time as 5 minutes and your child completes ALL responsibilities during the week, ourValues™ will automatically add 5 minutes to your child’s Daily Allowances.  Note that the app’s automatically calculated Daily Allowance will not exceed the Daily Limit incl. Bonus set by you as the parent. It can also be set to zero if you simply wish to maintain the same daily screen time allowance for your child;  your child will need to demonstrate the right behaviour in order to maintain their daily screen time allowance.

Deducted Time (HH:MM) is the time you set ourValues™ to automatically deduct from your child’s Daily Allowance, for EACH responsibility NOT completed during a week. For example, if you set Deducted Time as 15 minutes, ourValues™ will automatically deduct 15 minutes from your child’s Daily Allowances for EACH responsibility your child did not complete.

To change your child’s time Bonus and Deduction, tap the numbers (HH:MM) in the relevant boxes and make your changes. When done, tap the “tick” symbol at the top right hand corner of the screen to apply your changes.

Update ourValues™ Scoreboard

What is a scoreboard?

The scoreboard is where your child indicates whether a responsibility has been completed, and, where you go as the parent to approve your child’s self-assessment.

Here’s an overview of what the graphics on the scoreboard mean:

Hollow oVee: means your child has done a self-assessment and is indicating that the responsibility was completed.

Hollow dot: means your child has done a self-assessment and is indicating the responsibility was not completed.

Solid oVee: means you have approved your child’s self-assessment and is indicating that the responsibility was in fact completed. A screen full of solid oVees means your child has been responsible and has completed all activities, and demonstrated all behaviours, that you have set as your family’s values.

Solid dot: means you have approved your child’s self-assessment and is indicating that the responsibility was in fact not completed.

Blank box: means your child has not yet done a self-assessment of that responsibility.

To view your child’s scoreboard, sign in to ourValues™ to get to the parent home screen. Swipe between dashboards to select the child for whom you wish to view. Tap the arrow in the middle of the dashboard to get to the child’s scoreboard.

What is an oVee?

An oVee is the ourValues™ app mascot!  Your child will collect an oVee for every responsibility completed, once approved by you as the parent.

A scoreboard full of oVees means your child has been responsible and has completed all activities, and demonstrated all behaviours, that you have set as your family’s values.

How does my child do a self-assessment?

Your child can do a self-assessment of their responsibilities from their scoreboard.

To access the scoreboard, your child will need to sign in to ourValues™ and tap the arrow in the middle of their dashboard. On their scoreboard, they will need to tap the “Pencil” symbol at the top right hand corner of the screen to enter edit mode.

Tapping a box in edit mode will toggle between a hollow oVee to indicate completion of a responsibility, or, a hollow dot to indicate non-completion of a responsibility. A blank box means your child has not yet done a self-assessment of that responsibility.

Once your child has done the self-assessment, your child must tap the “tick” symbol at the top right hand corner of the screen to save their updates.

How do I approve my child’s scoreboard?

To approve the scoreboard, sign in to ourValues™, swipe the dashboards to select your child and tap the arrow in the middle of your child’s dashboard.  On their scoreboard, you will need to tap the “Pencil” symbol at the top right hand corner of the screen to enter edit mode. You can approve your child’s scoreboard at any time, irrespective of whether your child has performed their own self-assessment.

Once in edit mode, there are 2 ways to approve your child’s self-assessment.

Tapping each box: Tapping a box will toggle between a solid oVee to depict completion of a responsibility, or, a solid dot to depict non-completion of a responsibility. A blank box means your child has not yet done a self-assessment of that responsibility but you can override that, as you can with any of your child’s self-assessment, by tapping that box to toggle between a solid oVee, a solid dot or to leave it blank.

Tapping the Handshake icon: Another way to approve your child’s self-assessment is to tap the “Handshake” icon at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. A “Handshake” icon will appear if your child has made a self-assessment of one or more of their responsibilities. If you agree with all of your child’s self-assessment, you can simply tap this handshake icon. This will convert all hollow oVees and dots to solid oVees and dots.

You can override any of your child’s self-assessment. Once you have approved every responsibility, tap the “Chequered Flag” icon on the bottom left hand corner to automatically apply your child’s new screen time allowances.

To save your interim updates, tap the ‘Tick’ symbol at the top right hand corner.

Known Issues (with our Sincere Apologies)

Notifications setting

We’ve identified a known issue with the Notifications setting when apps are unhidden on Apple devices with iOS 11.x and above.   The Notifications setting is turned Off automatically.  Our engineers have raised this with Apple Inc. and have also cleverly released an interim solution which prompts you to turn these notifications on when apps are unhidden. Please bear with us while we continue to work on a more permanent solution.
