Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is the ourValues® app?

The ourValues® app helps families create healthy screen time habits for their children.  You can set daily screen time allowances for each of your children and when they have used up that time, the apps on their devices will be locked.  You can also set daily Start Times and End Times so your children are not using their devices at inappropriate times (eg. bed time).

ourValues® Standard (Lite) version [Watch YouTube Video]

The ourValues® app is a simple, straightforward screen time management solution.  You set how much screen time each child in your family will have and when they’ve used up their allocated screen time, all the apps on their devices are locked until the next day.  The app is easy to use and comes with several shortcuts, all accessible from each child’s dashboard.  You can use these shortcuts to immediately restrict their devices, update screen time allowances, all from the comfort and convenience of your own device. No more screaming at your children, chasing after them, confiscating or looking for places to hide their devices. Cool, huh! 😉👍

ourValues® Gold version [Watch YouTube Video]

The ourValues® Gold version has all the functions and benefits of the standard version, plus some additional cool features. In this version, you are able to teach your children your family values by setting activities and behaviours that your children must do. Simply work out what each child needs and enter these into the app as:

        • a set of responsibilities (activities and behaviours) you expect your child to complete; and
        • an amount of screen time you allow your child to use each day.

Whether your child completes the responsibilities assigned to them will determine if their screen time stays the same, increases or decreases. This approach helps encourage your child to do the things aligned with your family’s values and affect real behavioural change. In this version too, when your child has used up their daily screen time allowance, their apps will be locked and they will no longer be able to use their devices until the next day.

In addition to linking screen time with the right activities and behaviours, this version of the app also comes bundled with a weekly Screen Time Report that outlines what apps your child has used and for how long!

Both versions of the app also come with the following great features:

For families with more than one child, you can create customised profiles for each child, based on their age and learning requirements.

With the ourValues® app, you can effectively manage your children’s screen time use, teach them responsibilities and instil the values important to your family.

What is the iOS ourValues Remote Control for Android devices? (for use with Android ourValues® Gold version only)

Great news for parents who use Apple iOS devices, with children on Android devices!

This is a Remote Control app that works on Apple iOS devices and is a companion app for the Android ourValues® Smarter Screen & Parental Control app.

How does ourValues® work?

ourValues® manages your child’s screen time by using what you have set for your child’s profile.

Install ourValues® on your child’s device. Your child will need to sign in to ourValues® with their child PIN to unlock and use their device. Once your child signs in to the app, the timers will start counting down.

ourValues® Standard (Lite) Version [Watch YouTube Video]

Set your child’s daily screen time allowances using the ourValues® app. To use their device, your child will need to sign in to ourValues® and the timers will start. Once they’ve used up their daily allowance, the apps on your child’s device will be locked until the next day.

ourValues® Gold version [Watch YouTube Video]

This version works in the same way as the Lite version, and, it also allows you to instil your family values by linking your child’s screen time to a set of responsibilities (activities and behaviours).

Whether your child completes the responsibilities assigned to them will determine if their screen time stays the same, increases or decreases. During the week, your child does a self-assessment of whether they have completed their set responsibilities and when you approve your child’s scoreboard, the app will automatically maintain, reward or deduct your child’s daily screen time allowances based on what you have set for their profile.  You can approve your child’s scoreboard at any time, irrespective of whether your child has performed their own self-assessment.

How do I set up ourValues®?

Setting up ourValues® is easy!  After downloading ourValues® from the app store, launch it and follow the prompts on your device to install it. Once installed, tap “Sign Up”.  Again, it’s as simple as following the prompts on the device and once completed, you’re done!

ourValues® can be set up as either a “Remote Control” on a Parent’s device, or, as a “Device to be Monitored and Managed” on a Child’s device.

Remote Control

Set up ourValues® on your personal parent device and use it as a Remote Control! From your personal parent device, launch ourValues®, sign in as a parent and use it as a remote control to (i) restrict your child’s device usage immediately by tapping the oVee next to your child’s photo, or, (ii) update any screen time usage parameters by tapping the various shortcuts on your child’s dashboard.  [Watch YouTube Video]

Device to be Monitored and Managed

ourValues® needs to be installed on all devices that your child uses so that it can manage the screen time on those devices.  Your child will need to sign in to ourValues® with their child PIN (PIN defaulted to four zeros (0000), unless changed) to unlock and use their device. Once your child signs in to the app, the timers will start counting down.  [Watch YouTube Video]

What is an oVee?

An oVee is the ourValues® app mascot!

A green oVee next to your child’s photo on their dashboard means your child is allowed to use their device at that time and a red oVee means their apps are locked.

For ourValues® Gold users, your child will collect an oVee for every responsibility completed, once approved by you as the parent. A scoreboard full of oVees means your child has been responsible and has completed all activities, and demonstrated all behaviours, that you have set as your family’s values.

How do I personalise ourValues®?

Sign in to ourValues® to get to your Parent Home Screen. You can then personalise the app by accessing various settings from the Menu at the top left hand corner of your home screen.

Why does my child need to sign in to ourValues®?

Make sure your child taps the red signout icon when they have finished using their device.

How does my child personalise ourValues®?

You will need to grant permission for your child to edit their profile.  To do this, sign in to ourValues® as a Parent and tap on your child’s photo. Turn the slider On for “Allow child to edit details”.  Once you have granted permission, your child can sign in to ourValues® to get to their dashboard and then personalise the app by tapping the Settings cog on the top right hand corner of their dashboard.

Profile: Change their name or photo.

PIN: Change their PIN.

Time’s Up Warning: Turn this slider On to receive a notification telling them their screen time for the day is nearly up.

What is a dashboard?

A dashboard provides an up-to-date summary of each child’s key information at a glance.

Usage Schedule: Start Time and End Time are displayed at the top of the dashboard.

Status: A green oVee indicates your child is currently able to use devices. A red oVee indicates a restriction is in place and your child is unable to use devices.

Today’s Allowance: The maximum amount of time your child can use devices today.

Time Left: The amount of time left your child has today, to use devices.

Responsibilities Completed (ourValues® Gold only): This shows the number of responsibilities you have set and how many have been completed by your child.

To view your child’s dashboard, sign in to ourValues® to get to your Parent Home Screen. Swipe left or right to view your children’s dashboards.

How do I track my child's location?

For your peace of mind, see your child’s location from the comfort of your own device!

Sign in to ourValues® to get to your Parent Home Screen. Swipe between dashboards to select the child whose location you wish to track. Tap the Location pin on that child’s dashboard and you will then be presented with a map showing your child’s location. [Watch YouTube Video]

IMPORTANT: Your child must be signed in on their device, with their device connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data and not in Sleep Mode.

What are 24/7 Apps?

Your child may have some safety, health or educational apps that you never want to block from use. You can set these as 24×7 apps. These 24×7 apps are never blocked from use, even when your child has used up their daily screen time allowance. [Watch YouTube Video]

For your child’s safety and security, by default, we have assigned Phone, Messages and Contacts as 24/7 apps and they are listed under the ALWAYS AVAILABLE list*.  You can change these at anytime by simply turning the sliders Off.

*  Exceptions to this can occur where specific devices refer to these apps by different names (eg. “Phone” as “Dialer” and “Contacts” as “People”). In these instances, simply look for these apps in the CHOOSE APPS list and turn the sliders On for these apps to make them always available.

Manage Daily Screen Time Allowances

How does ourValues® manage my child's screen time?

ourValues® has timers that count down as soon as your child signs in to ourValues® with their child PIN to unlock and use their device. These timers are based on the parameters set by you as the parent, in your child’s Usage Schedule.

Your child’s screen time will be restricted when:

    • they have used up their daily screen time allowance;
    • it’s outside of their allowed usage schedule; or,
    • when you manually restrict their use of devices.

When a restriction is in place, a red oVee will be displayed next to your child’s photo.

What is my child’s Usage Schedule?

Your child’s Usage Schedule is where you set how ourValues® automatically manages your child’s device usage times.

Here’s an overview of what the different fields mean:

Daily Limit incl. Bonus (ourValues Gold version only): The maximum amount of time your child can use devices, including any bonus time your child earns for completing ALL weekly responsibilities.

Daily Allowance: The amount of time your child can use devices between the Start Time and End Time for a specific day.  Your child cannot use devices after reaching the Daily Allowance.

Start Time: The time of day ourValues® allows your child to start using devices.  Your child cannot use apps before this time.

End Time: The time of day ourValues® stops your child from using devices.  Your child cannot use apps after this time.

You can set different daily screen time allowances for each child. Swipe left or right on your Parent Home Screen to get to each child’s dashboard.

How do I restrict my child’s device immediately?

You can manually and immediately stop your child’s usage of devices at any time by using the Restrict Now function. [Watch YouTube Video]

Sign in to ourValues® to get to your Parent Home Screen. Swipe between dashboards to select the child for whom you wish to manually and immediately restrict screen time.

Tap the green oVee to the right of your child’s photo and restrict the use of your child’s device immediately. The restriction you set will be automatically applied to ALL of your child’s devices where the ourValues app is installed.

You can either nominate a time by setting the clock, or, choose to restrict usage up until you say so by checking the “I say so” box. Tap the “Ok” button to immediately restrict screen time. The bottom of the screen displays the devices your child is currently signed in to and whether the restriction you have set has been actioned on those devices. To remove the restriction, simply tap the “Cancel” button.

Remember, you can use this feature, remotely, from the comfort of your own device!

My child is running out of screen time for the day. How do I give my child more time to use their devices?

In some instances, you may wish to give your child additional screen time just for the day (eg. to finish off their school homework), or, to reduce their screen time to get them outdoors. This is simple to do by using the shortcut on your child’s dashboard. [Watch YouTube Video]

Sign in to ourValues® to get to your Parent home screen. Swipe left or right on your Parent Home Screen to get to your child’s dashboard.

Shortcut

Time Left: Tap Time Left on the bottom right of your child’s dashboard. Remember, this change is applicable for the day only. The child’s screen time allowances will revert back to the original settings the following day.

You can do this remotely from your own device or directly on your child’s device

How do I set my child's 24/7 apps?

These 24×7 apps are easy to set or remove at your leisure, but remember that they must be set from the devices that your child is using, as each device may have different apps installed. You can set different 24×7 apps for each child. Swipe left or right on your Parent Home Screen to get to each child’s dashboard. [Watch YouTube Video]

Sign in to ourValues® on your child’s device to get to your Parent Home Screen. Swipe between dashboards to select the child for whom you wish to set 24/7 apps. Tap the Settings cog at the top right hand corner of the dashboard and select the 24/7 Apps line item.  You will then be presented with the ALWAYS AVAILABLE and CHOOSE APPS lists.

ALWAYS AVAILABLE for your child

This list contains the apps that you, as the parent, have selected to be always available for use by your child. You can remove an app from the ALWAYS AVAILABLE list by turning the slider Off.

CHOOSE APPS from this device

This list displays all apps installed on the device from where you have accessed the 24/7 screen. As this list is device specific, it will change from device to device depending on what apps are installed on each device. Choose the app you want to add to the ALWAYS AVAILABLE list by turning it On with the slider. The chosen app will then be added to the ALWAYS AVAILABLE list.

For your child’s safety and security, by default, we have assigned Phone, Messages and Contacts as 24/7 apps and they are listed under the ALWAYS AVAILABLE list*.

*  Exceptions to this can occur where specific devices refer to these apps by different names (eg. “Phone” as “Dialer” and “Contacts” as “People”). In these instances, simply look for these apps in the CHOOSE APPS list and turn the sliders On for these apps to make them always available.
Why is "Time Left" on my child’s device different to what’s displayed on my parent device?

You may find your child’s Time Left counter to be a few minutes different across devices. This is because ourValues® only syncs Time Left from your child’s device to other devices every 5 minutes.  If the other devices are inactive or in sleep mode, the Time Left counters will line up again within a few minutes, after the next sync cycle.

Reward Right Behaviours

(ourValues® Gold version only)

How does ourValues® reward the right activities and behaviours?

ourValues® Gold rewards the right behaviours if your child completes all responsibilities assigned to them. [Watch YouTube Video]

The reward could simply be that your child gets to keep their current daily screen time allowance (if you set Bonus Time as zero), or, you could give them a small increase in their daily screen time allowance.

What is the Time Bonus and Deduction?

This is the amount of time ourValues® will automatically add or deduct from your child’s Daily Allowance, depending on whether your child has completed ALL weekly responsibilities or missed ANY responsibilities during a week.

Bonus Time (HH:MM) is the time you set ourValues® to automatically add to your child’s Daily Allowance, for completing ALL weekly responsibilities during the week. For example, if you set Bonus Time as 5 minutes and your child completes ALL responsibilities during the week, ourValues® will automatically add 5 minutes to your child’s Daily Allowances.  Note that the app’s automatically calculated Daily Allowance will not exceed the Daily Limit incl. Bonus set by you as the parent. It can also be set to zero if you simply wish to maintain the same daily screen time allowance for your child.

Deducted Time (HH:MM) is the time you set ourValues® to automatically deduct from your child’s Daily Allowance, for ANY responsibility NOT completed during a week. For example, if you set Deducted Time as 15 minutes, ourValues® will automatically deduct 15 minutes from your child’s Daily Allowances if any responsibility is not completed by your child.

Update ourValues® Scoreboard

(ourValues® Gold version only)

What is a scoreboard?

The scoreboard is where your child indicates whether a responsibility has been completed, and, where you go as the parent to approve your child’s self-assessment.

Here’s an overview of what the graphics on the scoreboard mean:

Hollow oVee: means your child has done a self-assessment and is indicating that the responsibility was completed.

Hollow dot: means your child has done a self-assessment and is indicating the responsibility was not completed.

Solid oVee: means you have approved your child’s self-assessment and is indicating that the responsibility was completed. A screen full of solid oVees means your child has been responsible and has completed all activities, and demonstrated all behaviours, that you have set as your family’s values.

Solid dot: means you have approved your child’s self-assessment and is indicating that the responsibility was not completed.

Blank box: means your child has not yet done a self-assessment of that responsibility.

To view your child’s scoreboard, sign in to ourValues® to get to your Parent Home Screen. Swipe between dashboards to select the child for whom you wish to view. Tap the arrow in the middle of the dashboard (Responsibilities Completed) to get to your child’s scoreboard.

Your child can do a self-assessment of their responsibilities from their scoreboard. [Watch YouTube Video]

To access the scoreboard, your child will need to sign in to ourValues® and tap the middle of their dashboard (Responsibilities Completed) to enter edit mode.

Tapping a box in edit mode will toggle between a hollow oVee to indicate completion of a responsibility, or, a hollow dot to indicate non-completion of a responsibility. A blank box means your child has not yet done a self-assessment of that responsibility.

Once your child has done the self-assessment, your child must tap the “tick” symbol at the top right hand corner of the screen to save their updates.

How do I approve my child’s scoreboard?

To approve the scoreboard, sign in to ourValues® to get to your Parent Home Screen. Swipe the dashboards to select your child and tap the middle of the dashboard (Responsibilities Completed) to enter edit mode. You can approve your child’s scoreboard at any time, irrespective of whether your child has performed their own self-assessment.

Once in edit mode, there are 2 ways to approve your child’s self-assessment.

Tapping each box: Tapping a box will toggle between a solid oVee to indicate completion of a responsibility, or, a solid dot to indicate non-completion of a responsibility. A blank box means your child has not yet done a self-assessment of that responsibility but you can override that, as you can with any of your child’s self-assessment, by tapping that box to toggle between a solid oVee, a solid dot or to leave it blank.

Tapping the Handshake icon: Another way to approve your child’s self-assessment is to tap the “Handshake” icon at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. A “Handshake” icon will appear if your child has made a self-assessment of one or more of their responsibilities. If you agree with all of your child’s self-assessment, you can simply tap this handshake icon. This will convert all hollow oVees and dots to solid oVees and dots.

You can override any of your child’s self-assessment.

Once you have approved every responsibility, tap the “Chequered Flag” icon on the bottom left hand corner to automatically apply your child’s new screen time allowances.

To save your interim updates, tap the ‘Tick’ symbol at the top right hand corner. [Watch YouTube Video]
